Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
Context:
We are seeking a skilled Welding Specialist Engineer to define, manage, and optimize welding processes for critical aerospace components, including pressurized aluminum vessels, metallic propulsion tanks, and fluidic tubings.
You will be a key contributor to the development and industrialization of high-performance welded structures that ensure the success and safety of our flight systems. Working at the intersection of engineering, manufacturing, and quality, you will help deliver flight-grade hardware that meets the highest industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Define and drive a roadmap on all welding development and operations in TEC
Define and qualify welding processes in compliance with ASME, AWS, and NASA standards.
Lead Welding Procedure Qualification Tests (WPQT) and manage Performance Qualification Records (PQR).
Develop and implement internal welding capabilities, including the design and deployment of dedicated in-house systems, some of which will be automated.
Collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional teams to ensure robust, compliant welding operations.
Validate welding operations through destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) and support continuous improvement efforts.
Education & Certifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
Certifications such as IWE (International Welding Engineer), IWT, or CWI (AWS) are highly valued.
Familiarity with aerospace welding standards (e.g. ECSS-Q-ST-70-39, NASA-STD-5006) is a strong asset.
Professional Experience:
Proven experience in the development, qualification, and industrialization of welding processes in demanding environments (e.g. aerospace, defense, nuclear).
Hands-on expertise in welding techniques: laser welding, FSW, plasma, electron beam, TIG, MIG, etc.
Experience in internalization projects, including equipment specification, automation, and commissioning.
Comfortable working with destructive and non-destructive testing methods, and coordinating with NDT teams.
Experience with welding documentation, traceability systems, and compliance with space-grade quality requirements.
Ability to lead technical investigations, supplier development initiatives, and process improvement actions.
