Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Solutions Architect to contribute to the design and delivery of secure, scalable and resilient Microsoft Azure environments underpinning critical defence-oriented platforms.
In this senior role you will steer architectural decision-making, help mentor Solution Architects and engineers, and act as the technical authority when integrating novel capabilities into production systems.
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary, globally-distributed colleagues and stakeholders to shape mission-focused cloud strategies that meet stringent security and performance demands.

Responsibilities:
- Architectural leadership – collaborate on the technical vision for Azure Landing Zones and related services, guiding the team through best-practice patterns and governance.
- Coach and develop a high-performing architecture/engineering cohort, allocate work and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Design secure, performant Azure
solutions, plan modular Landing Zone topologies to deliver scalability, resilience and cost optimisation. - Decision-making & governance – chair design reviews, own architecture decisions, and present options-analysis to senior business and customer stakeholders.
- Deploy and manage Azure infrastructure solutions using Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Bicep, Terraform).
- Direct the implementation of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI/CD) and champion automated testing and release processes.
- Lead the incorporation of emerging capabilities (e.g. mobile platforms, geospatial analytics, zero-trust architectures) into legacy or hybrid estates.
- Operational excellence – drive continuous monitoring, capacity planning and cost-control initiatives across cloud workloads.
- Liaise with defence partners, third-party vendors and internal teams to ensure solutions align with programme requirements and security mandates.
- Documentation & knowledge transfer – maintain architecture standards, patterns and run-books to support audit readiness and onboarding.
Required Expertise:
- Proven track record leading or supervising cloud architecture teams on large-scale Azure programmes.
- Deep knowledge of Azure Cloud Architecture, Infrastructure and Engineering, including Landing Zone design.
- Strong grounding in networking concepts (VPNs, firewalls, routing, switching) and security-by-design principles.
- Demonstrated experience governing IaC solutions (Terraform or Bicep) and modern DevOps toolchains.
- Familiarity with container orchestration and microservices (AKS/Kubernetes, Azure Container Apps, Docker).
- Experience with mobile device management (MDM) platforms and enterprise endpoint policy enforcement.
- Excellent problem-solving capability, documentation discipline and the ability to communicate complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience supporting defence, intelligence, or government clients, particularly in secure or classified environments.
