As our Head of Applied AI, you will be at the very heart of our AI strategy, playing a pivotal role in shaping how we leverage the world's most advanced Large Language Models (LLMs). This isn't just about writing prompts; it's about architecting the conversation between human intent and machine intelligence.
We currently have a huge library of complex prompts and templates that create the amazing experience we have today in Magic Notes - and use tools like HumanLoop, DeepEval, LangChain to ensure we are constantly building the best prompts for our users.
You'll build and lead a dedicated team, establishing the gold standard for prompt engineering within our organisation and directly influencing the products and services that will define our future. What You'll Be Doing
Lead and Inspire: Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of prompt engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous learning in the fast-paced AI landscape
Architect & Optimise Prompts: Spearhead the design, development, rigorous testing, and iterative refinement of high-quality prompts for a wide range of products for frontline services - Magic Notes is just the start
Co-designing with customers and users: We believe the best prompts are developed directly with users, designed for their real world workflows. From 121s with users to meeting partner engineers, this is a customer facing role
Drive AI Strategy & Innovation: Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and design leaders to translate business objectives and user needs into cutting-edge prompt engineering strategies. Proactively identify and champion novel applications of LLMs to solve complex challenges and create new value
Establish Governance & Best Practices: Define, implement, and oversee robust best practices, quality assurance standards, and efficient workflows for prompt engineering across the organisation. Understanding the complexity of evaluations and quality is paramount to our work
Champion Ethical & Responsible AI: Embed principles of fairness, transparency, accountability, and bias mitigation into all prompt engineering processes. Identify and address potential vulnerabilities in LLMs to ensure safe and reliable AI performance
Stay Ahead of the Curve: Continuously research and evaluate the latest advancements in LLMs, prompt engineering techniques, and AI ethics, ensuring our team and strategies remain at the cutting edge
Collaborate & Communicate: Act as the key liaison for prompt engineering, effectively communicating complex technical concepts and strategies to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What We're Looking For
We're seeking an experienced leader or someone in the position to step up with a deep passion for artificial intelligence and a proven ability to translate that passion into tangible results. You may have been an engineer before (or are still one) and want to shift more into the AI world, or you may have come from a different background but have been doing this work for a while.
Skills & Experience:
Several years experience in AI related fields or software engineering - we realise this is a nascent technology and expect applicants to have diverse experience
Hands-on expertise in designing, developing, optimising, and evaluating prompts for a range of leading Large Language Models (e.g., GPT-series, Claude, Gemini, Llama, open-source models)
Strong understanding of LLM architectures, capabilities, limitations, and common failure modes
Ideally some proficiency in Python and familiarity with common AI/ML frameworks and libraries (e.g., LangChain, Hugging Face Transformers, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
Proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing technical teams, fostering an innovative and collaborative environment
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to translate complex business requirements into effective technical solutions
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex AI concepts to diverse audiences
Desirable Attributes (Nice-to-Haves):
Experience building or orchestrating AI agents and complex AI-driven workflows.
Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL processes, and handling both structured and unstructured data for AI inputs.
Experience with AI red teaming, adversarial testing, or LLM security practices.
Experience in solutions engineering, or other roles at the intersection of technical development and customer sales
